With more than 300 days of sunshine a year and mild winters, the Algarve is a year-round destination. The best time depends on what you are after: beach and buzz, golf and walking, or quiet and lower prices. Here is a season-by-season guide for the Ferragudo area and the western Algarve.
Spring (March to May)
Perhaps the finest time of year. The countryside turns green and flowering, temperatures are pleasant for exploring villages and playing golf, and the beaches are almost empty. The sea is still fresh for swimming, but the long, bright days more than make up for it.
Summer (June to August)
Guaranteed sun, warm sea and beach life at its peak. July and August are high season, the busiest and hottest months; June already has beach warmth, with fewer people. It is the ideal time to make the most of Praia dos Caneiros and the pools.
Autumn (September to November)
September is still a beach month, with the sea at its warmest and fewer people. In October the weather stays mild, which makes it a well-kept secret. Golden light and excellent conditions for golf and coastal walks.
Winter (December to February)
Mild and quiet, with plenty of sunny days between occasional showers. It is the season for rest, spa and seaside walks without the crowds — and the most inviting rates of the year.
In short
- Beach and buzz: July and August.
- Shoulder season, beach with fewer people: May, June, September and October.
- Golf, walking and villages: spring and autumn.
- Rest and better prices: winter.
