Ferragudo has kept the fishing-village soul that many Algarve towns have lost. Narrow cobbled streets climb from the Arade river, whitewashed houses are trimmed in blue and red, and life gathers in the square by the water. It is one of the most authentic places in the western Algarve — and just minutes from Caneiros Luxury House & Suites.
Wandering the village
Start at Praça Rainha Dona Leonor, the heart of Ferragudo, ringed with café terraces. Then climb to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, at the highest point, for a view over the rooftops and the river. The lanes reveal craft shops, galleries and tucked-away restaurants — it is worth getting pleasantly lost.
São João Castle
At the mouth of the Arade, the Castle of São João de Arade was built to defend the river bar and neighbouring Portimão. It is a private property, but its silhouette over the water, especially at dusk, is one of the village's finest sights.
Beaches and boat trips
- Praia Grande and Praia da Angrinha, right beside the village, with calm water and views of Portimão.
- Praia dos Caneiros, a few minutes away, for a quieter day among the cliffs.
- Boat trips from Ferragudo and Portimão to the famous Benagil sea cave and to beaches you cannot reach by land.
Eating in Ferragudo
The village is known for fresh fish and seafood, grilled the Algarve way. From grilled sardines to octopus and the classic cataplana, the riverside restaurants serve the best of the Atlantic. Book ahead in summer, especially for dinner.
